A gaiwan is a traditional Chinese teaware that consists out of a cup, lid and saucer. Gaiwan tea cups are usually made from clay, glass or porcelain. The latter material is the most commonly used. The basic difference with other cups is that it has a lid but no handle. A Chinese Gaiwan can also double up as a tea cup. However, it’s generally used as a tool to brew smaller portions of tea, instead of using a larger teapot.

Benefits of Brewing Tea with a Gaiwan
Many people are not sure about the point of using a Gaiwan to drink tea. And furthermore, most casual tea drinkers outside of China and Japan have probably never heard of it. The main difference with large teapots is that they are smaller allowing you to brew and enjoy smaller portions of tea.
A good analogy for this is to compare a cook who has to prepare a meal for 1 person vs another cook who has to prepare meals for 20 people. It is likely that the taste of the meal that is prepared for 1 person will taste better than the meal that is prepared for 20. The same rule for brewing tea applies to using a Gaiwan as well.
The covered lid of the Gaiwan acts as a strainer, preventing loose tea leaves from entering the teacup.
Chinese Gaiwans are very versatile and can generally be used to brew any kind of tea. It takes some practice, especially if you steep smaller leaves (as a few might slip through), but it is certainly worth it. Over time, it will only contribute to a more pleasant tea experience.
