Sneezing, sore throat, headache and runny nose are the symptoms of the common cold, the common remedy for which is a dose of medicine. But there is more than one type of cold, and a specific TCM remedy for each. Taking the wrong cold medicine could make symptoms worse.
Traditional Chinese Medicine theory specifies two types of cold, the anemofrigid (cold wind) cold and the anemopyretic (hot wind) cold, according to their respective symptoms. As they have completely different causes, each needs a specific remedy.
Anemofrigid (Cold Wind) Cold
A common ailment in autumn and winter, the main symptoms are:
- Nasal congestion and a clear nasal discharge
- Headache, joint pain
- Mild fever
Ginger Brown Sugar Tea (one serving)
Ingredients: 4 slices of ginger, 2 teaspoons of brown sugar, 3 grams of black tea
– Peel the ginger and slice it with a knife.
– Put the Ginger together with the Black Tea Leaves into a Thermos Flask and add hot water.
– Brew for 10 minutes.
– After that, add brown sugar. Put it with a black teapot and add it to the hot water bottle for 10 minutes.
– Finally, add brown sugar. This tea can be brewed repeatedly for two consecutive days.
Medicinal Effects: sweating, warming, relieving cough, warming the stomach and spleen, dispelling cold and promoting blood circulation.
Anemopyretic (Hot Wind) Cold
Common in spring and summer, the symptoms are:
- Constipation, sore throat and cold symptoms
- High fever
- Sore, swollen throat
- Nasal congestion, yellow nasal discharge
- Reddened tongue
-Put the chrysanthemum together with the Long Jing Tea Leaves into a Cup and add hot water, cover for 10 minutes.
Medicinal Effects: Reducing blood pressure, chronic hepatitis, wind-heat headache, conjunctivitis and other symptoms.
